This loop heads out of Galax and turns left at the route junction. There are several miles of flat and rolling terrain as you ride through the Delhart valley. Eventually the road begins to leave the valley through a steady climb. At the top, a quick left turn will lead you to a rollercoaster road which rises and falls over several short hills. Another left turn leads to a rolling road and shortly you will be at rest stop #3. There is one major climb (KOM #3) after the rest stop which is followed by a descent and a few flat miles along Coal Creek as riders return to Galax.

This lollipop-shaped loop turns right at the route junction and follows the river for several miles. Passing rest stop #1 indicates the beginning of the first climb lasting three miles (with a couple of respites along the way). You will pedal through Carsonville before dropping down into the valley. The route continues across two steep Appalachian ridges (and KOM #1 climb) before entering the Town of Independence. A left turn at the traffic light in Independece leads to a 2-mile gradual downhill before climbing back up to Riverside Road. This road falls away for several miles but eventually leads to the second categorized KOM climb (KOM #2). Left onto Pine Mountain Rd. continues the climb and closes the "loop" portion back at Rest Stop #1/#2. Riders return to Galax on the same "stick" portion of the route along the river valley.

Combining loops #1 and #2 will give you a true Appalachian cycling experience. You will find a metric century with over 8000 feet of climbing and wonderful vistas. The entire route is on lightly-traveled local roads with river and mountain views. Three rest stops will replenish your energy and lunch will be waiting for you.
